The Gunter Family

I had the immense pleasure to meet Angela & Marshall Gunter earlier this March. First pregnancy, everything going smoothly and lots of excitement to add a “real” baby to their fur baby family. You see, they have, oh, 4 cats: Kelly, Abe, Timmy and Doobie. Now don’t ask me which is feature here, although I have a feeling it’s Kelly. I think she (at least I think it’s a she!) was the only one that spent the entire pregnancy perched on top of Angela’s belly. All of their fur babies are cute as can be! I should have tried harder to get a pic of thumbed Abe

Over the past 7 years, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know so many different women having their first, second, fourth and fifth child. There has been laughter and daydreams and way too much information passed between us that the average person may not even be aware could happen to any “body”. These women live all over the continent, some overseas and am also very lucky to have quite a few of them live geographically near me as well.

Now, in all that time, there has also been many hardships, although I like to think not as much as there has been joy. Many of these good friends, from here and around the world, have lost their children before they could see the light of day. Those are very dark days for all of us who call that woman friend.

But sometimes, a ray of light shines on one of them and they are spared that hardship this time around.

This session had FINALLY been schedule, after playing tango with different dates, colds, appointments, emails, voicemails… The evening before the shoot, she calls me. She’s in the hospital. Her 39.5 week baby girl has flipped feet first onto her cervix and the painful pressure could very likely cause labor requiring a C-section as feet first just doesn’t work. After thinking things over for a few minutes, I decided this was too important to her (we’d been talking about it forever!) to NOT do. So calling her back, I told her I’d be there in the morning for an impromptu photo shoot, right there in her hospital room. I even called the hospital to check that everything was ok before calling her back. Front desk even remembered her coming in as a 39 weeker flipping after being head down is a very rareÂ occurrenceÂ indeed!

So right there, in her shared hospital room, just before “the” Doc was due to come and *flip* baby girl, we had her maternity session.

I had the highest honor, and let’s face it, FUN photographing this family. I had the pleasure of befriending this awesome woman more than five years ago when we were both pregnant with our firstborns. Now with less then a couple of weeks’ waiting to go, I’m still overwhelmed by the blessing this is for their family and for all of us she calls friend & family. Love you Tara!

I had a ball getting to know Caroline and FÃ©lix this past Friday. Made a fool of myself a couple times (um, fell on my butt trying to get a shot!) but came out almost unscathed… almost. I’ve got a small scrape and a sore spot in my back But all worth the trouble. It’ll teach me to go outside in just socks…

Meanwhile, both of them were a joy to work with and so very patient. We had variable skies and SO much wind. Made for some cool flying hair effects though!

I had the great opportunity to photograph this wonderful family, I felt so much at home at some point I told little Laurie I was going outside, but said “mommy’s going outside”!! She reminds me SO much of my own little toddler! They we’re adorable and that little princess of theirs was just so precious I wanted to keep her But don’t take MY word for it…

It was a joy to photograph this beautiful family yesterday morning, if only the weather had cooperated a bit more, it had my mind racing all weekend! Hopefully it didn’t make me come across too green, although I still am I guess. They we’re great sports and we’re quite willing to just be themselves while I made due with the variable lighting the very somber dark skies we had that day.
